The brothers starred in their own '60s CBS show and transformed themselves from clean-cut comics into counterculture stars.
Their shows featured performances from bands such as The Who and The Doors, while Steve Martin and Rob Reiner were among the writing staff for The Smothers Brothers Show.
Clooney and his producing partner Grant Heslov have teamed up with Sony Pictures to secure the movie rights to David Bianculli's book Dangerously Funny: The Uncensored Story Of The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour.
Brian Hecker and Craig Sherman will write the script for the film, reports Deadline.
Clooney and Heslov recently worked together on political thriller The Ides of March.
