Tilda Swinton has described her new film We Need to Talk About Kevin as a journey into the mind of a woman losing control.

The Oscar winner plays a mother struggling to come to grips with her teenage son's murder spree in We Need to Talk About Kevin, which co-stars John C Reilly and Ezra Miller.

In an interview with USA Today, Swinton insisted that the film is not a "social commentary" in any way.

"It's phantasmagoria," the actress said. "It's mainly about one woman's mind. We don't even know how much of this is true. It's not about truth."

She added: "It's about her wallowing and drowning in a whole array of fantasy and memory."

Swinton also suggested that winning a 'Best Supporting Actress' Academy Award for Michael Clayton has allowed her more freedom in choosing the roles she'd like to play.

"It matters to me that it matters to lots of people, people I'm working with. The thing about having been in that arena once, even though it was completely random in my view, very much my feeling about it was that I won a raffle," she said. "I don't wish to be disrespectful. To me it is a raffle.

"Having been down there and won the raffle once, and if I'm told that that helped a film like Julia or Kevin get made and distributed and seen, I'm so grateful."

We Need to Talk About Kevin opens on January 27 in the US.
