Adapted from Jonathan Smith's novel, Summer in February tells the story of a love triangle set in the Edwardian artists' colony in Cornwall.
The Devil's Double actor has been cast as artist AJ Munnings, who competes with land agent Gilbert Evans (Downtown Abbey actor Dan Stevens) for the affections of Florence Carter-Wood (Ophelia Lovibond).
Summer in February is scheduled to start production next month with Christopher Menaul as the director.
In August, Cooper revealed that his head was photoshopped onto another man's body for The Devil's Double poster.
He joked: "It's brilliantly hideous, but it's eye catching. There's this bloke in the poster with a really hairy chest and a huge package and that's certainly not me! But it is my head."
