Cruise recently fuelled rumours of a potential continuation to the 1986 action film, when he said that he'd sign on for the project if the script was right.
While promoting his new movie Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, Cruise commented that he's been giving serious thought to reteaming with Top Gun director Tony Scott and producer Jerry Bruckheimer.
"You know, Tony and I and Jerry, we never thought about it. We never thought we could," he revealed to Access Hollywood. "But I love working with those guys and we've just been exploring stories."
Cruise added of his enthusiasm for Top Gun 2: "Got to get back in those airplanes on Top Gun. That could be fun. If we could figure that out, that'll be fun."
The original Top Gun is in the process of being transformed into 3D for a possible 2012 cinema re-release.
Cruise's current movie Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol opens in wide release today (Wednesday) in US cinemas and on December 26 in the UK.
