Star Trek 2 is to receive post-conversion 3D, according to the film's director JJ Abrams.
Previous reports suggested that the Star Trek follow-up would be filmed in 3D, but Abrams backed off that stance in an interview with MTV.
"We're shooting on film, 2D, and then we'll do a good high-end conversion like the Harry Potter movie and all that," the filmmaker explained. "Luckily, with our release date now we have the months needed to do it right, because if you rush it, it never looks good."
Abrams also revealed that he has not ruled out shooting Star Trek 2 in IMAX, saying: "We were talking about [shooting in IMAX] and I would love to do it. IMAX is my favourite format; I'm a huge fan."
Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Anton Yelchin and Simon Pegg are all expected to return for the Star Trek sequel.
Carlos actor Edgar Ramirez has recently been rumoured to be playing the villain in the sci-fi epic.
Star Trek 2 is released on May 17, 2013.
