The third and final movie to Christopher Nolan's Batman series was downloaded more than 12.5 million times in its first 24 hours after its release on Monday (December 19).
The Dark Knight Rises brings back Christian Bale, Gary Oldman, Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman along with new characters, Bane (Tom Hardy) and Selena Kyle (Anne Hathaway).
The new storyline will pick up eight years after The Dark Knight, and will focus on "finishing Batman and Bruce Wayne's story".
Oldman has promised that the series will "go out with a bang".
On shooting the superhero film, he told Digital Spy: "It's like reuniting with a family, that was sad, I miss that. We will go out with a bang, I'm sworn to secrecy but it's a great story. An epic conclusion."
The Dark Knight Rises will be released in theatres on July 20, 2012.
