The Mexican actor purportedly died of cancer in New York, the Mexican news agency Notimex reports. However, there has been no confirmation of the cause of death as of yet.
The office of Mexican President Felipe Calderon gave a statement about Armendariz's death, saying he was "a great actor who reflected well on Mexico at home and abroad".
Armendariz has appeared in a number of films, including Timothy Dalton's final James Bond outing Licence to Kill, Once Upon a Time in Mexico, The Mask of Zorro and The Legend of Zorro.
The actor was supposed to star in the Will Ferrell comedy Casa de mi Padre opposite Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna.
The film features Ferrell as Mexican rancher Armando Alvarez, who incurs the wrath of a fearsome drug lord.
