Rookie director confirmed for 'Halo' movie

Producer Jackson

The movie of video game Halo will be directed by highly regarded rookie Neill Blomkamp.

Peter Jackson – who is producing the film with partner Fran Walsh – said he was looking forward to working with the South African. He has been recognised several times for his short films and work on adverts.

His Citroen-Alive with Technology commercial won three Clio Awards and a Visual Effects Society Award last year while in 2004 he was named "One of the Top Five Directors to Watch" and selected for the Saatchi & Saatchi New Directors Showcase at Cannes.

A summer 2008 release is now planned for the film to be shot in Wellington, New Zealand, by Jackson and his WingNut Films company.

Jackson, who will employ his award-winning Weta studios for visual effects, said: "As a gaming fan, I'm excited to bring Halo's premise, action and settings to the screen with all the specificity and reality today's technology can provide.

"Fran and I are intrigued by the unique challenges this project offers. With Neill on board, I'm even more excited by the potential of this project."
