Mara featured memorably in The Social Network as the girl who broke up with Mark Zuckerberg (Jesse Eisenberg) in the opening moments of the film.
In an interview with The AP, the star explained that she was really honoured to have appeared in the highly acclaimed film.
"It just felt different than anything else I had done," Mara said. "After that, I got really picky."
The actress continued: "I didn't work for a year. I didn't work until I got this part [in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo] because I was just trying to find something that I was really passionate about."
Mara has reunited with The Social Network director David Fincher to play Lisbeth Salander in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, which is now playing in US and UK theatres.
Fincher recently commented that he wanted Mara to distract The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo's audiences.
