The British actor has been cast in the upcoming Bond film Skyfall, to be released later this year.
"I used to be a complete nerd about the books and the detail in them. They are fantastic," he told the Daily Mail.
"There was [Ian] Fleming's obsession with different kinds of champagne and caviar. He kind of fetishises these things."
On his upcoming role, he revealed: "I'm allowed to say that I'm a government agent."
When asked whether he would have been interested in playing Bond himself, he added: "There was a time in my life when that would have appealed to me. But I'm a bit on the old side now."
Producer Michael G. Wilson recently revealed that Skyfall will have a "magical 1960s feel".
Skyfall is due to hit cinemas on October 26, 2012.
