Martin Scorsese 'considering 3D' for 'Silence', Frank Sinatra biopic

Martin Scorsese is "considering" releasing his upcoming Silence and Frank Sinatra biopic in 3D.

The director told Variety that he was "considering the possibility" of following up his recent 3D Hugo with more movies in the format.

"I had always been interested in 3D, and I thought it made sense for Hugo," he said.

"Generally, whenever there's a new technological development, there's a corresponding sense of excitement.

"The same thing happened with the introduction of three-strip Technicolor and CinemaScope and Dolby. And then everyone remembers it's only a means, not an end.

"Real 3D is beautiful, but it's just one choice, one tool among many, and you only want to use it if it's the right tool."

Silence will be based on Shusaku Endo's novel about the trials of two 17th century Jesuit priests who travel to Japan in search of their mentor.

Daniel Day-Lewis, Benicio Del Toro and Gael Garcia Bernal are rumoured to be attached to the project.

The Scott Rudin-produced Sinatra biopic is still seeking a screenwriter.
