The We Need to Talk About Kevin star, who won a 'Best Supporting Actress' Oscar for Michael Clayton, explained that she started acting almost by accident.
"I've been making it up as I go along. In fact I never set out to be an actor. Still am not, really," Swinton told The New York Times. "I slid into performing at the point at which I stopped writing."
She further explained: "I slid sideways into the theater, basically because of the company I was keeping and a feeling of experimenting with friends who were really into theater. I was totally undriven."
Swinton also claimed that she's never understood why some actors consider themselves to be 'storytellers'.
She explained: "I'm constantly reading about actors who call themselves storytellers. I'm more of a micro-dotter. I like to isolate the spirit of a moment, in particular the moment when the 'me' that I was is forced to change."
The star has previously suggested that she may retire soon because she considers her acting career a "major mistake".
Swinton also recently described her latest film We Need to Talk About Kevin as "phantasmagoria".
We Need to Talk About Kevin opens on January 27 in the US.
