Kimberly Peirce has entered into talks to director Carrie.
MGM/Screen Gems want the Boys Don't Cry director for the remake, reports Deadline.
Brian De Palma's 1976 original starred Sissy Spacek, John Travolta, Amy Irving and Piper Laurie.
Based on Stephen King's novel of the same name, Carrie centres around the titular teenage girl who - caught between a repressive mother and bullying schoolmates - turns her psychic powers on her peers.
Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, who is best known for his rewrite of the Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark musical, has written the script.
He has said his version will be more grounded and closer to King's novel than the 1976 movie.
Peirce most recently directed Stop-Loss, released in 2008 and starring Ryan Phillippe, Abbie Cornish and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
