The director will make his movie debut on New Line Cinema's revival of the comedy franchise, reports Deadline.
Zabielski is best known for his work on several episodes of Comedy Central's Tosh.O.
Originally produced by Warner Bros, the series of comedy police movies received seven instalments before it was shelved.
Police Academy star Bubba Smith died of drug intoxication last year.
Zabielski trained in law enforcement and still works as a West Hollywood reserve officer, which is said to have helped him secure the role.
