The West Wing star will play Doctor Hamilton in the Henry Cavill-led superhero reboot, reports Variety.
No further details on the character have been revealed, although it is thought that Schiff's role is based on Professor Emil Hamilton from the Superman DC Comics stories.
Hamilton, who debuted in a 1987 issue of Adventures of Superman, is a scientist with ties to the secretive government research and development facility S.T.A.R. Labs.
Schiff's recent credits include TV series Criminal Minds: Suspect Behaviour and comedy movie Johnny English Reborn. He is a Primetime Emmy winner for his role as Toby Ziegler in The West Wing.
Man of Steel, opening in June 2013, stars Henry Cavill, Russell Crowe, Amy Adams, Diane Lane, Kevin Costner, Laurence Fishburne and Michael Shannon.
