Universal has started talks with Hot Tub Time Machine and Yes Man screenwriters Jarrad Paul and Andrew Mogel to write the sequel to the 2003 movie.
The project is being developed as a starring vehicle for Carrey, reports Variety.
Bruce Almighty saw Carrey portray a news reporter who meets God (Morgan Freeman) and is given his powers for a week.
A sequel to Bruce Almighty, titled Evan Almighty, was released in 2007 and starred Steve Carell as a Congressman who is told by God to build an ark.
Bruce Almighty's worldwide box office takings surpassed $480 million, while follow-up Evan Almighty earned $173 million.
