Writer/producer duo David Katzenberg and Seth Grahame-Smith are helming the film, and had already been given Burton's blessing to proceed with the project.
Burton said when asked by MTV News if he was working on the sequel: "Yes. I love that character, and [Michael Keaton] is so great in it.
"I always think about how great and fun that character was, so I just said to Seth, 'If you have some idea about it, go for it, and then I'll look at it freshly'. In the past, I tried some things, but that was way back when. He seemed really excited about it."
Katzenberg and Grahame-Smith have said they are unwilling to proceed with the movie without Keaton returning to his starring role.
Burton is currently working on Dark Shadows and Frankenweenie.
