Relativity Media has held the cinematic rights to Tim Seeley's Image Comics series since 2009, and is now moving forward with the project, Heat Vision reports.
Seeley, who created the action-horror title for Devil's Due Publishing in 2004, praised Nispel's appointment via Twitter.
"I appreciate the many congrats on the Hack/Slash movie news," he wrote. "It still may mean a hot jack-s**t injection, but, I thank you anyway! Things to consider: Marcus Nispel is a really nice guy, he actually reads the Hack/Slash comic, and he has an amazing beard."
Hack/Slash tells the story of Cassie Hack, a young girl who survives a killing spree and goes on to hunt down the perpetrators with her partner Vlad.
Nispel has prior experience in the horror genre, having helmed horror remakes The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Friday the 13th.
Hack/Slash is yet to be given a potential release date.
