The Artist, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy lead BAFTA Film 2012 nominations

The Artist leads the BAFTA Film Awards nominations list with recognition in 12 categories.
The major category nominations were announced by Daniel Radcliffe and Holliday Grainger at BAFTA headquarters in London on Tuesday morning (January 17), with a full announcement following soon after.

The Golden Globe-winning movie leads Tomas Alfredson's Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, which has 11 nominations, and Martin Scorsese's Hugo, which has been given the nod in nine categories. Scorsese will receive this year's BAFTA Fellowship.
The Artist and Tinker Tailor Solider Spy will face The Descendants, The Help and Drive in the 'Best Film' category. 'Best British Film' will see Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy compete against My Week with Marilyn, Shame, We Need to Talk About Kevin and Senna.

The 'Leading Actor' category sees Golden Globe winners George Clooney (The Descendants) and Jean Dujardin (The Artist) competing with Brad Pitt (Moneyball), Gary Oldman (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) and Michael Fassbender (Shame).
Meanwhile, Meryl Streep (The Iron Lady) is nominated in the 'Leading Actress' category alongside Bérénice Bejo (The Artist), Michelle Williams (My Week with Marilyn), Tilda Swinton (We Need to Talk About Kevin) and Viola Davis (The Help).
Streep and Williams were recognised with Golden Globes on Sunday night (January 15).


Michel Hazanavicius (The Artist) competes against Scorsese (Hugo), Alfredson (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy), Nicolas Winding Refn (Drive) and Lynne Ramsay (We Need to Talk About Kevin).
Other films receiving multiple nominations are My Week with Marilyn, with six nominations, and The Help and War Horse on five nominations each. Drive, The Iron Lady and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 each have four nominations.
The Descendants, Moneyball, Senna and We Need to Talk About Kevin are each nominated three times, while Shame, The Ides of March, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Bridesmaids and The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn have all been put forward in two categories.
The BAFTA Film Awards 2012 will be hosted by Stephen Fry from the Royal Opera House in London on Sunday, February 12.
