The first Total Recall starred Arnold Schwarzenegger as construction worker Quaid who is sent to Mars on a secret mission to discover his identity.
Beckinsale told USA Today that the new version will retain elements of the 1990 movie and the Philip K Dick story it was based on, but it will also establish its own identity.
"It's a very different take on it. It's still reimagining the future. The question of 'Is this real? Who am I?' is the same," the actress explained.
Beckinsale went on to say that she enjoyed playing a femme fatale as Quaid (Colin Farrell)'s wife Lori.
"I'm a villain, which is new. That was really great. There's a nicely slightly psychotic vibe to her, which is really fun," she said, adding jokingly: "[My husband and director] Len [Wiseman] was writing my part with me in mind, which I was kind of insulted about."
Total Recall - which also stars Jessica Biel and Bill Nighy - opens on August 3 in US cinemas and on August 22 in the UK.
