George Clooney's 'The Descendants' tops Australian box office

The Descendants has become number one in the Australian box office chart in its second week at the cinema.

The George Clooney movie, which was recently nominated for a BAFTA Award for 'Best Film', jumps up from fourth place last week after making $2,405,005 at the box office.

In second place is new entry Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, followed by last week's number one Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, starring Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law.

The Muppets falls down one spot from third to fourth after achieving $1,660,348 in Aussie box office takings, quickly followed by Daniel Craig thriller The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo with $1,446,448.

Other movies in the top ten include Meryl Streep's Margaret Thatcher biopic The Iron Lady, a role for which she won a Golden Globe award last week.
