The 28-year-old actor commented on the nomination by saying that he never expected his performance to be recognised by the Academy.

"I am so humbled, appreciative and in shock about this incredible honour," he said in a statement.

"I'd like to thank the Academy, Sony Pictures, the cast and crew of Moneyball, Brad Pitt, and, most of all, our brilliant director Bennett Miller."

Hill's Moneyball performance has earned him a slew of award nominations, including Golden Globe, BAFTA and Screen Actors Guild nods.

His co-star Pitt has been nominated for a 'Best Actor' Oscar opposite close friend George Clooney.

Moneyball is now available on DVD and Blu-ray in the US and is released in the UK on March 19, 2012.
