She told PA: "I was, and I am [scared of horses]. I've come away with an immense respect and appreciation of the majesty, power, beauty, skill and intelligence of these incredible creatures.

"[But] they are still a bit scary - they are very big and very powerful."

Watson went on: "When I was about 13, my school offered riding lessons and I went a couple of times, but I didn't like it. I got shouted at, I got cold, I got wet, I got muddy and it was scary."

Describing the joy of working with director Steven Spielberg, the star added: "It was immense. It's such a thrilling, thrilling thing to have done and the day that you get a call from your agent saying, 'Steven Spielberg would like to meet you' is a good thing.

"Despite thinking of him as a great big action director and a huge Hollywood mogul, the experience of working with him was in fact very intimate and performance-driven, and very enjoyable."

Spielberg's War Horse, which also stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Tom Hiddleston, topped the UK box office on the first week of its release.
