Neeson cited a chronic knee condition as the reason for his departure from the genre.
The 59-year-old star has appeared in a number of action hero roles, in films like Taken and Batman Begins, and said that he prefers to do his own stunts rather than handing them over to a double.
In a recent interview on The Graham Norton Show, Neeson said: "I love doing my own stunts but it's hard. I am turning 60 this year and it's getting harder."
Neeson is currently starring in the action release The Grey as an oil driller who must survive the extremes of the Alaskan wilderness.
