India's Central Board of Film Certification stipulated that several scenes, including a romantic encounter between Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig and a brutal sexual assault, needed to be omitted from the final product.
The film was slated for release in India on February 10, but the Mumbai-based branch of Sony Pictures issued a statement saying: "Sony Pictures will not be releasing The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo in India.
"The Censor Board has judged the film unsuitable for public viewing in its unaltered form and, while we are committed to maintaining and protecting the vision of the director, we will, as always, respect the guidelines set by the Board."
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo has grossed over $150m worldwide, and a sequel has already been commissioned.
Rooney Mara, who plays the titular character, was recently nominated for an Academy Award for her performance as the mysterious Lisbeth Salander.
