Paramount and MGM has hired the Grey director to both write and direct the new take on the Charles Bronson franchise, reports the Los Angeles Times.
Bronson starred in the 1974 movie, in addition to five sequels which followed over the space of two decades.
Sylvester Stallone was previously attached to star in and direct the project, which has been in the works for several years.
An early example of the modern action film, Death Wish starred Bronson as Paul Kersey, a liberal architect who becomes a vigilante after a brutal attack on his wife and daughter.
The Grey, which stars Liam Neeson, topped the US box office this weekend with an estimated $20 million.
