The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo star has replaced Blake Lively in the thriller, which counts Jude Law, Channing Tatum and Catherine Zeta-Jones among its cast.
Mara will play Emily Hawkins, an anxious and depressed woman with an addiction to prescription drugs. She unknowingly murders her husband while on the drugs and is put on trial, reports Deadline.
Tatum will play the husband role, while Zeta-Jones and Law are portraying doctors who treat Mara's character. All three actors have previously worked with Soderbergh.
The Ocean's Eleven filmmaker's The Informant! and Contagion screenwriter Scott Z Burns has penned the script for the movie.
Soderbergh has insisted that he will retire from directing after finishing Side Effects and his Liberace biopic Behind the Candelabra with Matt Damon and Michael Douglas.
