Gran Torino scribe Nick Schenk has signed up for the project, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
MGM is said to be targetting a summer start for RoboCop, which tells the story of a police officer who is gunned down in the line of duty and revived as a law enforcing cyborg.
Paul Verhoeven helmed the 1987 original, which starred Peter Weller as the titular cop Alex Murphy and Nancy Allen as his partner Officer Anne Lewis.
Padilha, who replaced Black Swan director Darren Aronofsky on the project, previously said that his version of RoboCop will be a new take on the property, addressing "the topics that Verhoeven untreated".
X-Men: First Class star Michael Fassbender has been linked with the leading role in the film.
