The film, penned by Brian Helgeland (LA Confidential, Mystic River), will be a historical horror. It will feature real-life figure John Paul Jones battling against sea monsters during the Revolutionary War.
Robert Zemeckis was originally in final talks to direct the film.
However, Zemeckis decided to leave the project last November, forcing studio executives to relaunch their search for a director.
Bird, whose recent live-action directorial debut Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, became one of the highest-grossing films in the franchise to date, is currently in negotiations with producers, Vulture reports.
Here There Be Monsters is slated to begin principal production later this year.
