Hardwicke directed the first Twilight movie, but said that she only took on the project after she read the Stephenie Meyer novel.
"I thought the script was horrible, but then I looked it up on the internet and I thought, 'OK, it's based on a book and people tend to like it. There's gotta be something there'," Hardwicke shared to New York Magazine.
"So I read the book and I thought it captured that feeling of being madly in love. And I thought, 'That's kind of a good challenge, to see if, as a filmmaker, I could make you feel that giddy, crazy'."
Hardwicke also revealed that she told Summit she would only sign on to the movie if she could rewrite the whole thing, to which the studio agreed.
Since Twilight, Hardwicke has directed Red Riding Hood and is currently considering the erotic thriller Plush.
