Chronicle has topped the Australian box office with almost $3 million in its first week at the cinema.
The Josh Trank-directed sci-fi film, which tells the story of three high school friends who discover they have superpowers, narrowly fends off competition from George Clooney's The Descendants, which took $1,321,903 over the weekend.

Kate Beckinsale's Underworld: Awakening, which was last week's number one movie, drops down to third place, followed by Australian wedding comedy A Few Best Men.
In fifth place is Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, which made $708,678 in ticket sales, closely followed by last week's number five Hugo, with $688,314.
Other films in the top ten include Daniel Craig thriller The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Robert Downey Jr's Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows.
