The Walt Disney Company is reportedly in final negotiations over the rights to Saving Mr Banks, a scripted drama about the making of the Julie Andrews classic, Deadline reports.
Kelly Marcel penned the screenplay, which is currently on the industry's Black List of unproduced scripts. The story focuses on Disney's 14-year campaign to convince author P.L. Travers to allow the studio to adapt her Marry Poppins novel for cinema.
Meryl Streep is rumoured to be in line for the part of Travers, who refused to sell any of her other works to Disney, expressing her distaste towards the animated sequences in Mary Poppins.
Mary Poppins was released in theatres in 1964, starring Andrews in the title role and Dick Van Dyke as the Cockney jack-of-all-trades Bert. A stage version of the film is currently touring Australia.
Disney is expected to make an official announcement about the project once negotiations over Marcel's script have been finalised.
