'Beautiful Creatures' casts Emma Thompson

Emma Thompson has joined the cast of Beautiful Creatures.

Richard LaGravenese will write and direct the film, which is an adaptation of Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl's novel of the same name.

Beautiful Creatures tells the story of a young girl named Lena Duchannes in a small Southern town, who struggles to conceal her magical powers. She meets high school student Ethan Wate and the pair team up to rid her family of an ancient curse.

Jack O'Connell and Alice Englert will play Ethan and Lena, respectively. Thompson will take on a dual role in the film, portraying a dark witch and a small town religious firebrand. Viola Davis will appear in among the supporting cast, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

This summer, Thompson will appear in Effie, a biopic based on the life of Effie Gray. She also has a writing credit on the project, which will feature Dakota Fanning in the title role.

Alcon Entertainment will produce Beautiful Creatures for Warner Bros Pictures.
