The X-Men: First Class star is in negotiations with helmer Ridley Scott, with whom he has been working under on Prometheus.
Deadline claims that there is a "high likelihood" the duo will reteam for the project, which is based on an original screenplay by The Road author Cormac McCarthy. The story follows a lawyer who lands himself in danger dabbling in the drugs trade.
Producers Nick Wechsler and Steve and Paula Mae Schwartz snapped up McCarthy's script last month. Scott committed himself to the project shortly after, confirming it as his follow-up to Prometheus.
"The spec falls smack in the middle of what everyone responds to with Cormac's novels," said Steve Schwartz. "Since McCarthy himself wrote the script, we get his own muscular prose directly, with its sexual obsessions.
"It's a masculine world into which, unusually, two women intrude to play leading roles. McCarthy's wit and humour in the dialogue make the nightmare even scarier. This may be one of McCarthy's most disturbing and powerful works."
The Counselor is scheduled to begin shooting in May.
