The Dolphin Tale actor will appear alongside Tom Cruise in the sci-fi project, which is being lined up for release next summer.
Oblivion takes place on a post-apocalyptic Earth, with Cruise portraying a lone soldier tasked with repairing drones to help fight off an alien race. Freeman's role is yet to be specified, according to Deadline.
Olga Kurylenko will play Cruise's overseer and love interest, and Andrea Riseborough rounds off the supporting cast as a mysterious woman who crash-lands on Earth.
Oblivion is based on a screenplay by Toy Story 3 writer Michael Arndt. Universal Pictures acquired the project after striking up a deal with Disney.
The movie is scheduled to arrive in theatres in July, 2013.
