Almost 100 unlicensed guns were seized by police in an area of Budapest's international airport in October 2011, amid worries that the collection could fall into the hands of criminals.
Pitt, who stars in and produces World War Z, faced questioning over the guns, but officials at Hungary's National Bureau of Investigations dropped the case on Monday due to a technicality.
According to E!, authorities failed to identify which organisation or person had "ownership rights", making it impossible to hold the correct person responsible.
The upcoming post-apocalyptic horror film, based on the novel of the same name by Max Brooks, sees Pitt as Gerry Lane, a UN employee who scours the world, interviewing survivors of the zombie apocalypse.
Directed by Marc Forster, the film is scheduled to be released on December 21.
