He will star in the heart-warming comedy about one man's disastrous method of dealing with grief, reports Variety.
Red Hour Films' movie is based on the novel by Susan Trott.
It centres around multimillionaire Tim Forester, who deals with his grief over his son's death by stealing a flamingo figurine belonging to his niece.
His flamingo thievery escalates and soon he has lost his business, his wife and receives multiple gunshot wounds, but begins to feel better.
The Flamingo Thief is being adapted by Michael LeSieur (You, Me and Dupree) and produced by Red Hour's Ben Stiller and Stuart Cornfeld.
Ferrell is due to star in Spanish-language Casa de mi Padre and Dog Fight alongside Dan Ackroyd and Zach Galifianakis.
