The Luther star insisted that the creatures will be enormous, but shot down comparisons to Japanese movie monster Godzilla.
"It's hard to say," Elba told MTV News of the monsters' sizes. "Godzilla would throw out the wrong sort of image, I think. We are talking about some big MF-ers."
Director Guillermo del Toro previously promised that he would create the finest monsters ever shot for Pacific Rim.
"It is my duty to commit to film the finest f**king monsters ever committed to film," he said at the time.
Elba went on to say that though the film will feature a lot CGI, a surprising number of real sets were constructed for the movie.
"There's a lot of actuality in this one because [Guillermo]'s created huge sets," he said.
"I mean, we've taken over four sets in Pinewood in Toronto and built a lot of the stuff that you might see. Yes, there is huge CGI I'm sure, but we built a lot of stuff too."
Pacific Rim is currently eyeing a July 12, 2013 release.
