The film, about African American house maids working in rural Mississippi in the 1960s, has earned dozens of accolades this year, including a 'Best Actress' Oscar nomination for Davis.
In a recent interview with CBS This Morning, Davis discussed why she thinks her mother Mae Alice, a former maid who grew up in a segregated South Carolina, might be wary of seeing the film.
"I think it's painful. You have a whole generation of women who don't want to be reminded of the past... which is why I loved [my character] Aibileen," she explained.
"She represented most people in that time period who just had to suck it in - and their whole lives, dreams, hopes, everything, just took place in their spirit."
Davis, who recently shared her own experiences with racism, currently appears in another Academy Award-nominated film, Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close.
She will next be starring in the film adaptation of Ender's Game, alongside Harrison Ford, Asa Butterfield and Abigail Breslin.
