Cuba Gooding Jr: 'Dad asked Tom Cruise if he was gay'

By
Cuba Gooding Jr has recalled the horrifying moment his father asked Tom Cruise if he was gay on the set of Jerry Maguire.

The 44-year-old, who won an Oscar for his role in the 1996 comedy drama, claimed during an appearance on The Graham Norton Show that he "nearly fainted" when his dad made the gaffe.

"He gave Tom a hug and said, 'I love you man. Now seriously, are you gay or not?'" he explained. "I almost fainted. And thought, please Lord, let me disappear. Tom just laughed and said 'no'."

Gooding also said that he is still pestered to repeat his famous Jerry Maguire catchphrase "show me the money" over 15 years later.

"I doesn't go away. I get it all the time," he said. "I wish I had a wand that would make people disappear whenever they say it.

"It's hard, especially when some drunk in a bar asks and finally you say it and he says, 'No, say it like you said it in the movie'."

Gooding is currently starring in George Lucas's Red Tails, a film based on segregated African-American World War II pilots.

Discussing his pride in the project recently, he said: "I look at this movie as my love letter to the men and women in our armed services. No matter how screwed up the politics are and war is in general, what they are doing is selfless and heroic and should be celebrated because they provide the freedoms we enjoy."
