Lone Survivor is based on the story of Afghanistan war hero Marcus Luttrell, who was left to fend on his own after all his colleagues were killed in a Taliban attack during a 2005 reconnaissance mission.

Berg began developing the film in 2007 after Universal purchased the rights to the tale for $2 million against $3 million.

The studio apparently agreed to back the film following the death of Osama Bin Laden in May 2011 and Berg's recruitment to the upcoming Battleship movie, in which Kitsch also stars.

Berg explained: "Bin Laden's death has cleared the way for this, a movie that will be an unapologetically patriotic film that honours and pays homage to an incredible group of badass guys who do this."
