It was given its first public viewing this evening (March 17) during a panel at WonderCon in Anaheim, at which director Ridley Scott appeared onstage with co-writer Damon Lindelof and star Charlize Theron.
Scott returns to the world of Alien for the movie, which centres on a team of space explorers who discover the clues to the origins of mankind on a distant planet.
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo's Noomi Rapace stars as scientist Elizabeth Shaw, while Michael Fassbender plays an android called David. Luther's Idris Elba and Theron are also among the all-star cast.
Prometheus recently debuted a viral video on the TED website, showing Guy Pearce's Peter Weyland delivering a TEDTalk in the year 2023.
Weyland offers up hints at the film's plot as he discusses mankind's evolution.
"At this moment in our civilisation we can create cybernetic individuals, who in just a few short years will be completely indistinguishable from us. Which leads to an obvious conclusion: we are the gods now," he says.
The film's IMAX trailer also debuted online earlier today.
Prometheus opens in cinemas on June 1.
