The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, David Fincher's adaptation of the bestselling Stieg Larsson novel, has reportedly made a financial loss.

Studio bosses at MGM have told Deadline that despite earning $231 million (£145 million) worldwide, the film still performed "below [their] expectations, and [they] booked a modest loss".

The film, about a disgraced financial journalist who teams up with an edgy hacker to solve a 30-year-old crime, starred Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara in the titular role. Mara was nominated for a 'Best Actress' Academy Award for her role.

The book on which the movie is based is part of a trilogy, along with The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest.

Movie sequels are scheduled, but executives are reportedly now wary of continuing the franchise. MGM has optioned to possibly co-finance the next two films with Sony "assuming [they] can achieve better economics".

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is currently out on DVD, and sales may tip the odds for future movies.

It is unclear whether or not David Fincher will be asked to direct the next two films.
