A bidding war for the erotic novel Fifty Shades of Grey is officially underway.
Fifty Shades of Grey tells the story of Anastasia Steele, a young college student who becomes involved with a successful businessman with a penchant for BDSM. The erotic novel has sold over 250,000 copies since its release in June 2011.
In spite of its racy content, the book has attracted the attention of Hollywood and Deadline reports that nine studios are currently engaged in a bidding war for the property.
Warner Bros, Paramount, Fox Searchlight, Sony Pictures, Universal, Paramount, New Regency, Mandate and Lionsgate/Summit Entertainment have all been invited to place bids on the film rights.
Originally penned as Twilight fan fiction under the title of 'Master of the Universe', Fifty Shades of Grey is written by British author EL James. It is the first in a trilogy of novels.
Lionsgate recently set box office records with its adaptation of The Hunger Games.
