Feig and Firth have been offered deals to make the new version, with the King's Speech actor in line for the lead role, reports Variety.

A writer has yet to be confirmed, but The Weinstein Company will reportedly fill the position in the near future.

The comedy drama centres on a rich white aristocrat who becomes a quadriplegic after a paragliding accident. He eventually forms an unlikely friendship with a young convict of Senegalese descent who is later hired as his caregiver.

Original producer Nicolas Duval-Adassovsky will return for the English remake.

Colin Firth and Paul Feig were in line to work together on Bridget Jones's Diary III before Feig dropped out of the project.

The Intouchables stars François Cluzet and Omar Sy and has become the second most successful French film of all time at the French box office.

The original movie will open at US cinemas on May 25.
