Kevin Costner has revealed that Princess Diana had expressed interest in starring in The Bodyguard 2.

The actor and director starred opposite the late Whitney Houston in the original 1992 film, and he explained that the Princess of Wales wanted the sequel's lead role.

"Diana and I had been talking about doing Bodyguard 2," Costner told Anderson Cooper's Anderson show.

"I told her I would take care of her just the same way that I took care of Whitney.

"She wanted me to write it for her. I said, 'I'll tailor it for you if you're interested'. She goes, 'I am interested'."

Costner had previously said in 2003 that the sequel would have seen his character rescuing the Princess from paparazzi before being involved in a relationship.

The Field of Dreams actor is said to have received the first draft of the script for The Bodyguard 2 on August 31, 1997, the day Princess Diana died in a car crash in Paris.

The Bodyguard was released across US cinemas last month to mark the film's 20th anniversary and to honour Whitney Houston.

A remake is said to be in the works, with Rihanna being linked to the role originally played by Houston.
