McBride is also attached to write the script for the comedy.
The original 2010 film Klovn is based on a Danish television comedy that has been running since 2005.
It centres around a man and his best friend who are planning a debauched canoeing trip.
The man is forced to bring his girlfriend's 13-year-old son with them to prove that he can be responsible after the couple discover that she is pregnant.
McBride is currently starring in the third and final season of HBO comedy Eastbound & Down.
His previous movie credits also include Your Highness, Tropic Thunder, Up in the Air and Pineapple Express.
Work is due to start immediately on Clown, with The Hangover director Todd Phillips due to co-produce the movie.
