The former High School Musical actor is currently starring in the latest Nicholas Sparks film adaptation The Lucky One with Taylor Schilling, Blythe Danner and Jay R Ferguson.
In The Lucky One, Efron plays a Marine named Logan, who travels to North Carolina to search for the woman in a photograph he believes kept him alive during his time in Iraq.
When Collider asked Efron about playing more intense parts, he shared: "It's been incredibly fun and educational. I set out very early on.
"I look back when I said that I was going to do this ages ago, when I was young, I didn't know what I was getting into. I think that it's proven to be everything I dreamed it would be.
"It's been great but it's very different. If you'd have asked me when I was auditioning for High School Musical if I ever thought I was going to play a Marine..."
"I don't think music is done by any means," the 24-year-old actor added. "I would love to do it again but it's finding the right thing."
Last month, Efron admitted that he doesn't think of himself as a heartthrob.
"I can't explain to you what it feels like to be a heartthrob," he explained. "I don't think I am a heartthrob. I hate it. [The term] follows you around, but you don't deserve it."
The Lucky One arrives in theatres on April 20 in the US and May 2 in the UK.
