Stephenie Meyer has optioned the film rights to Down a Dark Hall.

The Twilight scribe is developing the movie version of the Lois Duncan novel with her Fickle Fish production company, which is also producing the adaptation of her own novel The Host.

"Not too much information to share as yet, but even in this early stage, it is still very exciting," Meyer wrote.

"Down a Dark Hall was my favourite of [Duncan's] novels... and it gave me some serious nightmares when I was 9."

The novel centres on a 14-year-old who enrols in a boarding school with only four students.

Fickle Fish produced the comedy Austenland as well.
