Films based on stories by British authors have dominated a list of the last five year's highest-earners.

Figures released by the UK Film Council showed six of the top 10 films internationally between 2001 and 2005 were originally from British writers.

The British-written top 20 together made £6.7 billion at the box office. The list was led by the Lord Of The Rings trilogy - which closely follow's JRR Tolkien's original novels - and the four Harry Potter films - credited to JK Rowling.

The third Rings - The Return Of The King heads the list, with other top-ten places going to The Chronicles Of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe, originally by CS Lewis, The War Of The Worlds, from the HG Wells novel and Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, based on the Roald Dahl story.

They also revealed that the biggest film made in Britain was The Da Vinci Code, followed by Stormbreaker and The Wind That Shakes The Barley.
